I think it's pretty strange and confusing to have different requirements for the first nested rule vs the others just to avoid a single character in some cases. Also agree with the above points about making editing (eg inserting or reordering rules) more difficult. Better to just be consistent about it IMO. I think, just like variables, people coming from SASS etc just aren't used to the syntax yet.
