Thanks Andy. Rendering CSS colors to PDF is an area I know; all I was saying there is that what you've proposed looks implementable in PDF (where Lab _is generally_ represented as floating point, by the way, although L is clamped to 0..100). All I was trying to establish is whether there was some theoretical bounds on Lab that I was unaware of that _didn't_ also apply to XYZ. It's true enough that it's represented as a 16-bit value in ICC profiles, although of course that's how ICC does everything, including XYZ.
