The new macOS Big Sur has an example we could look to - they allow developers to set an "accent color" in native apps. https://developer.apple.com/design/human-interface-guidelines/macos/overview/whats-new-in-macos/#app-accent-colors

It seems that this accent color is applied across form controls, such as checkboxes, dropdowns, sliders, and textfields, but additionally used as the text selection highlight color and applied to selected elements from lists.
