Yeah, English is a little hard... It's accurate to say that the boolean matching means "has a contrast preference", just not which way the preference leans. In general, the "true" boolean match for the prefers-* MQs isn't a particularly useful value, only the "false" match is. (It's just that several of the prefers-* only have a single truthy value, so an author can pretend that the presence of a preference tells them exactly what the preference is.)
