If it is possible to specify the alignment points inside the image file, that makes it much easier for authors to reuse the content & keep things synchronized. But not all images will have that extra metadata, so it would be nice to still be able to set the values from the outside document. And as I mentioned above, for SVG in particular it might make sense to reuse the same property for defining the alignment points on the root element of the SVG file.
