Oh - yes, agreed. If you squint a bit there are two disjoint categories; but when seen clearly they are mostly but not completely distinct. Remember the typeface used in Jurassic park? Yellow with a red inner line? As an example, that could be done so that the inner part is always that red, but the outer part takes on the surrounding text color.
