I think this should be an explicit non-goal.  The table model is 
asymmetric; cells are children of rows, but not of columns.  `opacity`
 on a row definitely affects the rows inside of it, but `opacity` on a
 column definitely does not; at *most* it affects the backgrounds that
 the column itself draws.
