The resolution was based on a discussion of the value specified in both dimensions. Prior to the introduction of 'normal' as distinct from 'stretch', it seemed to me quite obvious that specifying "align-axis: center" would not cause distortion, but cause the vertical axis to trigger "shrink to fit" behavior (which preserves the aspect ratio) and use the extra space for centering.
