Re: EUDI: Has any considered issuing a credential attesting to a subject's DID and DID resolution endpoint into the wallet?

Hi Micheal,

Yes and no. I think you are missing a few pieces here. EUDIW are regulated in eIDAS2, including a lot of different specifications. They rely on QTSPs and X.509 infrastructure solely. Officially eIDAS is technology neutral so it talks about certificates. In reality, that means X.509 ;). Also for wallet it is hard to maintain that it is technology neutral, because we all need to support the same specifications. Having said that in the DIIP community there are quite a few wallets that are EUDIW capable, so they do support what is being build in the EU, but at the same time there are also DID capable. Just some random examples: Hovi, IGrant, Sphereon, Paradym/Animo, Credenco, Impierce Technologies, Yivi. In the end DIDs can be seen as a resolution layer for key material, resources and services. That key material can be expressed like JWKs, Cose keys as well of course.

To be clear, it doesn't mean all these providers will notify their wallets as actual EDUIW wallets. They are just capable of supporting the specifications for the most part. The DIIP profile has been created more for the business side, because eIDAS2 sort of forgot about businesses, hence now the EU comes up with Business Wallets and a regulation. Including Large Scale Pilots like WeBuild and Aptitude. Although these are also using a lot of QTSP building blocks, the usage of DIDs, Linked Data, different trust establishment technologies like OpenId Federation for non qualified cases is something one would expect and it is certainly being tested.

I noticed a few questions in your chat, where you clearly can see a LLM only knows what it knows. There are certainly vendors that could run their wallet as native desktop apps, we for instance are one of them. We have a headless wallet engine that is entirely multiplatform (js, native, java, wasm, android, ios). So we can run most on a server, desktop, directly in browser, on mobile devices or on kiosks.

Wrgt the question about desktop apps being able to access keys in mobile: There are multiple ways to do that, but actual EUDIW right now mostly deploy a remote HSM model, which of course automatically means it is easy to also hookup server/desktop wallets as well.

Also, the part of using did:drn as verifiable credentials is kind of hallucinated. It talks about accepting a PID like it is nothing. In order to actually retrieve any credentials (Q)EAAs and PID as they are called in eIDAS2 terms, it means the relying party needs to be registered including the purpose of the respective credentials/claims. A PID is the highest form of credential, not something just to use on every interaction. So, what you seem to be after, are certainly not use cases that will actually land in regulated/notified (thus accepted) EU wallets.

Having said that, IMO EUDIW is not guaranteed to become the success some think it will be. There are many use cases for non qualified, and the QTSPs are pretty well organized. eIDAS1 was not really a big success, with some member state exception who have proper eID solutions. If everything hinges on QTSP and prices for organizations do not come down, I personally believe eIDAS2 will not see the adoption some people think it will get, with the exception of some specific high value interactions with governments, banks etc
