This is exactly my main concern with the recent "proof of personhood"
credential paper -- not that the credential type it described is bad, but
that it chose "personhood" as the label for what it attests, and thereby
encourages the idea that attestations of personhood should come from
governments or at least from big institutions. Governments and big
institutions should not be in the business of certifying personhood, but
rather status vis-a-vis their organization. Personhood is derived from
being a member of the human species, and has nothing whatsoever to do with
a relationship to a particular organization; its attestation by other
humans of high reputation should be definitive.
