Manu, the short story is that in mid-2021, the Bhutan National Digital Identity (NDI) team got a hold of the SSI book<https://www.manning.com/books/self-sovereign-identity> I co-authored with Alex Preukschat  (plus 54 contributing authors including many on this list). They got in touch with Alex and I, and then retained the Evernym team to help them guide them in building this over the past two years.

This spring the Bhutan Parliament should pass a National Digital Identity Act I spent 6 months helping them draft — all based on the Principles of SSI<https://trustoverip.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/ToIP-Principles-of-SSI.pdf>, the ToIP Governance Architecture Specification<https://trustoverip.org/permalink/ToIP-Governance-Architecture-Specification-V1.0-2022-12-21.pdf>, and the ToIP Governance Metamodel Specification<https://trustoverip.org/permalink/ToIP-Governance-Metamodel-Specification-V1.0-2022-12-21.pdf>.

They are very seriously committed to it, from the King of Bhutan on down. And the NDI team they have assembled, led by their CTO Jacques von Benecke, is amazing. As you put it perfectly, it is a textbook example of a sovereign embracing self-sovereign identity.

So, like 1) that's awesome, and 2) they're using Decentralized
Identifiers!?, and 3) I hope no one is missing the irony of an actual
sovereign using Self Sovereign Identity.
