I believe this strengthens my argument that adding things to the browser core is [more or less] "reserved" for the browser vendors.

This is actually quite OK, because bloated browsers will most likely only slow down the development of the web.

It seems faster, simpler and more open adding "non-core" stuff through extensions.  The problem is rather the lack of a standardized extension mechanism.
