RE: Visual Indicators

Hi Rachael,

My main points were in the previous email:
https://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/w3c-wai-gl/2020AprJun/0074.html

In terms of problems to solve:

  * For anything with a wide scope (across ‘controls’) we then have to define what an acceptable visual indicator would be. That is a big task, we started that and people appeared to give up.
  * For anything with a narrow scope (e.g. only buttons to proceed in a process) it needs to be at least somewhat effective from a user point of view.

The critical thing is that it is clear how it is applied, for which trying examples works best.

E.g. for a few very different sites, can you apply the criteria and agree what is in scope, and whether each instance passes or fails?

I’d suggest:

  * An ecommerce site like Amazon.com (homepage and a product page).
  *   https://www.gov.uk/, and a gallery/navigation page like https://www.gov.uk/browse/driving/driving-licences

  * Pinterest (logged in homepage and a ‘pin’)
  * A web based email client like Gmail or Outlook.

I’ll also mention the ‘anti-virus’ analogy: We want the SC to catch things that are negative whilst not impacting aspects that are not an issue for PwD. I.e. not generate false-positives.

I have to say I think it is a big challenge, I’m not sure that we know enough about which design aspects do/don’t cause issues (in all contexts) to be sure about this.

Best of luck,

-Alastair

Hello David, Alastair, and Chuck,

The COGA taskforce feels that visual indicators are incredibly important and is working this weekend to come up with a proposal to address the comments and create a possible way forward for discussion on Tuesday.

The document they are putting together is at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1WhZAbswvPHs7A3stfqM_ATsaBHPeGbHtARcmaKMck1U/edit#<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1WhZAbswvPHs7A3stfqM_ATsaBHPeGbHtARcmaKMck1U/edit>

If you have any thoughts on a possible way forward or if you can clarify what you see as the critical hurdles, please jump in.

Thank you all,

Rachael
