I've written a summary of the current thoughts on Symbol support in the Personalization Task Force. https://github.com/w3c/personalization-semantics/wiki/Symbols---the-big-picture This is highly relevant to our work - we have a couple of design patterns for symbols: * Use symbols that help the user * Support personalization of symbols and controls The summary is fairly technical but it would be good to know if anything is missing that is important for a good symbol experience for both users and content authors.
