design requirements - some guidance and a sample

Hi folks

For people working on the design requirements at google docs here are some guidance and a sample.

Let me know what I have forgotten

.

Look at the issue in github (it will be linked to in the document) you need to rework it to use simple language and speak to web developers

We are not so worried about testability and wide applicability as we were in the WCAG version. SO make it easy to understand and follow rather then testable clarity

you can increase the scope to fully address the user need (again - this is not WCAG)
It might be clearer to split your item into a few items.

Try and follow the template and sample bellow

Template

1. Start with a short clear insruction (eg Make the purpose of your page clear )

2. followed by clear information of what to do

(eg Use:

A clear title or heading that summarizes the purpose of a page, or

Breadcrumbs that clarify what you are doing, or

Other clear signposts that have been tested by users with cognitive disabilities.)

3. The have a few sentences on the why we are doing it - the benefits

4. Then have an example or two of it helping people with cognitive disabilities. (this can just be a few sentences)

5 Then add any details for implementation or exceptions. (eg: Always use breadcrumbs in tasks with a few steps. Breadcrumbs should include, steps completed, current step and steps pending.)

6. add the typical success/conforming cases (a bit like a sufficient technique in wcag ) This can be a picture of what a conforming web snipit might look like. This helps people get what we mean

7. add the typical failure cases (a bit like a failure technique in wcag) This can be a picture . Again it shows people what not to do and helps people understand the problem

Sample

1.1 Make the purpose of your page clear

Use:

A clear title or heading that summarizes the purpose of a page, or

Breadcrumbs that clarify what you are doing, or

Other clear signposts that have been tested by users with cognitive disabilities.

Note: this section is a draft!!

This benefits many people including people with a weak memory or anyone who is easily distracted. This includes people with age-appropriate forgetfulness, or ADD.

For example, someone with mild dementia is using online shopping. They get distracted and then when they look at the screen again they have forgotten what they were doing. Put a clear heading at the top of each page that shows clearly what the page is and what they are doing.

Always use breadcrumbs in tasks with a few steps. Breadcrumbs should include, steps completed, current step and steps pending.

Todo: Add picture -success heading

Todo:Add picture -success breadcrumbs

Todo: Add failure

All the best
