to

"A Compound Document using references consists of a root document which 
may have one or more child documents, which may in turn have their own 
child documents."

This will address comment

Section 2.1:

"A compound document using references consists of a number of child 
documents."

- More accurately, it consists of a root document which may have one 
or more child documents, which may in turn have their own child 
documents. I suggest improving the language along these lines.
