Although this is only about Nokia devices it should give you a good idea of some device classes. You can consider the MWBP as relating to the "mobile phones" and higher. Nokia smartphones' browser is not as strong as iPhone and Android today, but with browser 7.3 (coming as part of Symbian Anna very soon) it gets very close.

Designing for 2 classes is a common approach that should give you the high-end quality that your company likely wants for smartphones, but also gives you the high compatibility with devices of all ranges. This can be achieved with what is often called responsive design or adaptive design.
