It looks like the issue you are raising is dual:
* queuing/stitching buffers (and a request to reconsider startImmediatelyAfter)
* sample format conversion

Although the two issues are related, I suspect they should be tracked and treated as separate issues in our tracker:

As far as I can tell, there is no open issue for the former. It would be good if you could add it.
