Resolved on teleconference (http://www.w3.org/2012/12/05-audio-minutes.html):
We'll remove the MIDIMessage interface and simplify as noted in this thread,
with the understanding that if we need to for real-world reasons (e.g.
performance, also as noted in this thread), we can add another API (the
"onmessages" event) to fill that gap.
