I can't find any of the discussion as to why the text role was removed. I remember some talk about adding authoring warnings (which I helped write) and limiting the role to the HTML-specific element <img> (which I objected to) and then it disappeared from the spec. In my opinion, this was one of the more important roles included in ARIA 1.1.

The text role implementations remain in both WebKit (Safari) and Blink (Google Chrome). We'd have too many sites break if we removed it.

That said, I'm looking to find more information about why it was removed or a CFC about its removal as I have been unable to find it.
