Minutes for Monday, 8 January 2018 ARIA Authoring Practices Task Force

All,

Due to the bot crash I created the minutes from my IRC client. They can
be found below. For reference the IRC log is at
https://www.w3.org/2018/01/08-aria-apg-irc but that too stops before the
end of the meeting.

<mck> agenda link
https://github.com/w3c/aria-practices/wiki/January-8%2C-2018-Meeting
TOPIC: 2018 Priorities and planning
mck: any input on use of GitHub? Send to Matt...
mck: any ideas on doing things differently?
mck: please share if anything comes up
mck: high level priorities as task force
mck: change discussed at TPAC
mck: ARIA WG changes - we'll be developing in tandem
mck; our role = help authors and help ATs be on same page
mck: will have affect on way we do things as spec contains more than APG
mck: more than one branch under development at a time plus probably more
mck: plus support development of ARIA 1.2
mck: last 2 years devoted to getting first APG 1.1 release
mck: need to work with ATs to get high quality support
mck: how well different patterns are supported by browsers/ATs
mck: APG examples are canonical examples so changes need to be
orchestrated with browsers and ATs
mck: maybe regression test suite going forward
mck: also massive backlog for roles missing
bg: totally agrees
bg: especially difference between grid handling
mck: yes, differences between ARIA versions
mck: combo box is one where difference is addressed
bg: just make sure to call out differences if they exist and why they exist
aa: do we have list of contacts for ATs and browsers?
mck: yes, have for all major ATs and browsers
aa: where does this list live?
mck: all are members of ARIA WG
aa: could leverage my past experience with ATs and browsers to get
things fixed
mck: mobile needs more focus
<sirib> both iOS and Andriod
aa: maybe involve Paul Adam?
bg: scripting may be cause
mck: focus on ARIA implementation for mobile
<jamesn> https://www.w3.org/Consortium/Member/List#xP
<jongund> http://pauljadam.com/demos.html
mck: working on getting contractors to work with APG
aa: risky to leave mobile out because of vast adoption
bg: does lots of mobile web testing due to extensive usage ARIA usage
bg: also hybrid (mobile+web)
bg: some areas not widely supported by mobile
mck: should be handled by 'accessibility object model' (AOM)
mck: need to create scope going forward - will add and look for feedback
from group
aa: need a date picker!
jn: not trivial due to background dependencies
mck: starting next week will promote agenda items
jg: will help code date picker
mck: major hair cut for May release milestone to rein in to doable
mck: treegrid, spinbutton, alert dialog, window splitter - lacking
either example or pattern
mck: high priority for next release as they are essentially mostly done

Regards,
James
