Hi Josh, Jason, all, Just wanted to quickly follow up on this thread since our discussion earlier this month [0]. Here’s what I understand the situation and next steps to be... 1. We read the WebXR Device API Explainer mentioned in the previous email in this thread [1]. It doesn’t add any specifics about the WebXR Gamepads Module, but I think we were pretty confident (from e.g. the repo description on GitHub [2]) that the purpose of the API was to allow WebXR developers to query dedicated XR motion controller hardware using the familiar Gamepad API - rather than supporting Gamepads as XR controllers. 2. It would be good if we could confirm this understanding about the purpose with someone from the XR team - I think Josh said he may be able to check on this. I’m happy to help if I can. 3. Assuming that the purpose is what we think - about providing a familiar API for developers - I don’t see this as being under APA’s remit. 4. However, as a group we probably should think about whether supporting alternative controllers to “standard” XR motion controllers could be of help for accessibility. I think this takes us as far as we can go (at least without doing step 2 above) on action 2216 [3]. best regards, Matthew [0] Our discussion on the 8th about this: <https://www.w3.org/2020/01/08-apa-minutes.html#item01> [1] Previous email in this thread: <https://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-apa/2019Nov/0022.html> [2] WebXR Gamepads Module repo: <https://github.com/immersive-web/webxr-gamepads-module> [3] Action 2216: <https://www.w3.org/WAI/APA/track/actions/2216> -- Matthew Tylee Atkinson -- Senior Accessibility Engineer The Paciello Group https://www.paciellogroup.com A Vispero Company https://www.vispero.com/ -- This message is intended to be confidential and may be legally privileged.
