Re: the role of knowledge (mis) representation in conflict

This is a touchy subject. Most misinformation stems from staged events or deep fakes where AI driven video editing is used to create video footage that is false. This type of misinformation is hard to detect, contrary to textual misinformation.Fact checkers deal mainly with textual material, but recently fact checkers themselves have come under attack, e.g. in the UK.
Most fact checking is done in the realm of COVID and vaccine conspiracies, and political statements by Democrats, Republicans, the Trump camp, QAnon and extreme right factions.
Another interesting avenue of fact checking is the validity of scientific article results, conclusions and data, which when successfully used, can lead to retractions. In the barrage of preprint articles on COVID-19, this has become an issue, but applies to all other domains of academic research as well.

This is not a political thread, but I d like to leverage the critical topic of the war in Ukraine to once again reiterate the importance of adequate KR in getting facts straight
One of the reasons motivating this CG when I started itit was that after realizing that information is routinely fabricated, ie that knowledge is routinely mis-represented to influence and manipulate public opinion and distort facts, the only thing I could do is contribute s perspective gtom intelligent systems design.

Since we have excellent KR methods in AI, designed to model and uphold truth using solid logic, and that AI technology is being used to mediate most of the information the public receives it makes sense to chime in.
in addition to be advancing the state of the art in KR itself with novel constructs and artefacts, rwe should leverage the wealth of AI KR resources to
expose misinformation and miserpresentation

I am compiling a set of resources showing how the mainstream media is deliberately misrepresenting (faking) the facts of Ukraine .

I think it is important that the AI KR community appreciates once more how misrepresentation reinforces false narratives and conflict, and that a correct approach to modelling is imperative

Here for example, French war correspondent says that Ukrainian government has been committing atrocities against Ukranian civil population for over 8 years, causing thousand of casualties, but that her evidence is being ignored

Many more reports showing how mainstream media is misrepresenting knowledge about Ukraine would benefit from a technical analysis from a KR perspective
