Just as a point of information: I've recently submitted an Internet-Draft: http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-mealling-oid-urn-00.txt which is the first step in registering a URN namespace for OIDs. I have one more edit pass and it should be registered officially. Which means you can start using things of the form: urn:oid:1.3.6.1.4.1.x.whatever where 'x' is your 'enterprise-number' which is registerd with the IANA and can be found at: ftp://ftp.isi.edu/in-notes/iana/assignments/enterprise-numbers Odds are, if you're sufficiently large, you probably already have one. If not, they're easy to get by filling out this form: http://www.iana.org/cgi-bin/enterprise.pl Important note: this URN namespace is not currently intended to be resolvable since no one maintains a single database of all OIDs. One may come into being in the future but nothing says you have to use it or even insert your OIDs into it... -MM -- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Michael Mealling | Vote Libertarian! | www.rwhois.net/michael Sr. Research Engineer | www.ga.lp.org/gwinnett | ICQ#: 14198821 Network Solutions | www.lp.org | michaelm@netsol.com
