Hi Tim,

There are some RTF-to-XML converters (at least upCast, logictran, majix) that 
do a nice job of cleaning up RTF output from Word and producing decent XML. 

I tested upCast beginning of this year with good results.

The XML output from these converters can certainly be used as the start of a 
word-to-FO publishing chain.
