No less sense than letting people validate their sites with XHTML. All
the icon represents to me is that I did that and that I did it through the
W3C.

I don't believe anyone said they are, although judging by the responses
(excluding yours of course) to the icon that is on my site, people have been
expecting and waiting for that icon to show up. They are creating code that
validates to XHTML1 as it currently is and would like to use a W3C icon to
show that that's what they have done. IMO, it's really that simple and since
there has been no official explanation on what the icons represent, my
assumptions are no less (or more) accurate than yours.
