I think pcx and bmp files are hardware dependent.  I'm not sure
about tif.  As I recall, gif and jpeg file formats were designed
to be hardware independent... hence more appropriate for use on
the web.

But, echoing an earlier comment, this really has nothing to do
with HTML... so if there's flames to be sent, please send them
off-list.  :)
