to put some perspective on this I was stunned to find that mozilla (due 
for a non-beta release) does not currently support alt tags for broken 
images, blocked images, etc.
It was recognised as a bug ~18 months ago

I've wasted a lot of time and energy assuming that alt was supported and 
wondering what I was doing wrong......

I still use mozilla all the time though...
mind you i still use alt as a tooltip, because some of my students might 
need the info, and they use ie5.5/win'98.
