Validity and Well-formedness

Can any well-formedness fan out there please explain me the well-formedness
euphoria? Me, I do not see any advantage of allowing markup like

  <p my="own" attribute="junk"></p>

to pass, and I would like to see the discussion limited to validity (only to
prepare the party when we all suddenly discover that validity is a P1
criterion, of course).
