Re: new appendix revisited

Thanks Thierry,  I was just about to do this.  You're fast!

I just did one small edit on E.1 3rd paragraph -- Stuart and I had agreed 
on equivalent but slightly revised wording (basically swapping order of a 
couple sentences).
