Thanks, Peter.  I agree that in most areas, "imprints" are more consistent than with comics.  And really, if you stick to a sane definition of imprints, most current comics publishers are pretty sane as well.  No one really has any trouble distinguishing Marvel Knights, Marvel MAX or Icon from "plain" Marvel.  Or Vertigo from DC (indeed, many don't realize that Vertigo isn't a separate publisher).

It's when people confuse "imprint" with indicia publisher / publisher of record that it goes south.  In many historical comics discussions, the term "imprint" gets applied to things like "Marvel Worldwide, Inc." vs "Marvel Publishing, Inc."

Moving on, the page number thing sounds reasonable- I have trouble stepping back from the GCD's field usage viewpoint.  And when it comes to distribution or any similar ID, flexibility is going to be a much bigger advantage than specificity, as it's too easy to write a uselessly narrow definition.
