I am Chintan Patel, nth year PhD student in the Biomedical Informatics Deparment at Columbia University. My interests lie in facilitating ontology development for domain experts and using ontologies to improve information retrieval. I have worked on projects in applying Semantic Web Services for health-care workflows, Using ontological approaches for phenotype representation and developing Ontology-driven user interfaces. My current research involves using statistical learning approaches to glean knowledge from 'traditional' medical terminologies (in UMLS) to facilitate information retrieval and support development of formal ontologies.
