I do not believe that most of the research was documented. Most of it 
happens while experimenting with interactive tools like the Live DOM 
Viewer (and in the case of IE8's namespace parsing stuff, Philip's awesome 
"Zombie DOM Viewer" too), or chatting on IRC, or while I'm thinking about 
the subject in the shower.

Firefox already has this for MathML and in the DOM inspector for all 
markup.

The DOM inspector in Firefox also has a shortcut.

I agree that it would be great if other browsers picked up "XML view" 
mechanisms. That's up to them though. There's nothing we can put in the 
spec that would have any effect either way.
