Which "Firefox"?  The Firefox handling of <object> has changed significantly 
since the latest stable release, and is currently in flux (the last significant 
change was three days ago).  You're almost certainly using the stable release if 
you see the behavior you describe; Firefox development builds haven't had that 
behavior since September 2005.
