Ah.

But… this will set the style for the sign appearing _in the text_. But why would it do it for the character appearing at the beginning of the note itself? Per the spec, as far as I could see, the <noteref> element does not appear in the DOM before the <note>, so I do not see how CSS will work. Or is there some trick in the processing model that I miss which would modify the DOM?
