Thanks Luca.

I certainly see where being able to lookup device info based on the IMEI
would be cool. However, it seems like: a) soon there won't be a
guaranteed correlation between the IMEI and device capabilities. What
you'll end up with is "for this IMEI with the standard shipped software
load, this is what you can expect - however, your millage may vary. ",
b) gathering the necessary information about the IMEI info in the field
is going to be challenging - at least as challenging as getting good
device info from the manufacturers, c) IMEI isn't always (often?)
available to application writers.

In my opinion, this makes IMEI of limited utility. I guess my view is
that given all of the challenges associated with collecting and
verifying this data and the limited number of hours/people available to
tackle the problem, we would be better served focusing our attention
somewhere else. I love WURFL. I would rather see an open source,
formal program for certifying the data it provides and closing any gaps
between it and "commercial" solutions. Of course, that's just my
opinion, I could be wrong.

you are missing the part where we stated that IMEI would just be an
*extra* way to identify the device
as opposed to the only way.

Seems to me that using user-agent/connect info is better than
IMEI. IMEI is tied directly to the hardware. As the devices become
more and more advanced, the client that the user is using - which is the
thing that must be adapted to - will be downloadable and only have a
passing association with the hardware. Or am I missing something.

I was told offline that IMEI is only GSM and CDMA too.

Quite frankly, I still don't see why we should give up on such a
powerful unique key to device capabilities, but it explains why
"purists" don't like the idea :-)

Of course, I will consider seriously the creation of the IMEI
module for WURFL in the months to come. Is there any operator willing to
put some money there?
