Forwarded here so it's on the archives... I believe that the XHTML document requires the closure of empty elements including 'meta.' In section "18.2 XHTML Output Method" the 4th bullet of the third paragraph includes the following: <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=EUC-JP"> The XHTML documentation does include the '/' empty element closure (at least once).
