Does XMLCalabash support Input/Output via String (i.e. other than Files)?

Hi all,For our project, the XMLCalabash engine instance sits in the middle
of some other objects. We were wondering if we can feed XMLCalabash an
String input (produced by the preceding object) and get similar output to
feed to the next object. We do not want to read/write from/to files for the
Primary input and output because that hurts the performance of our process.
If XMLCalabash has I/O that is not file-based, an example would be greatly
helpful.
