Marc, You raised an issue 432[1] about how a binding determines which nodes should be optimized. The XMLP WG has closed this issue by stating that data to be optimized MUST be in the canonical form of base64 as defined by XML Schema. So a binding is free to optimize any nodes that have such a lexical form. I trust this resolution is acceptable.
