FW: Revision of ISBN / Révision du ISBN

FYI
I'm passing on this background information to give protocol implementors a
heads-up on introduction of 13-digit ISBN, in case it has an impact on your
applications.

IPIGlettes:
Version 2 of the ILL Protocol specifies the size of the ISBN string as 10
characters - and so implementators of this protocol will have to address the
issue of what to do with 13-digit numbers if they are received. I've
asked that this topic be added to the agenda of the IPIG meeting later this
month.

ZIG & NCIP'ers
Neither Z39.50 and Z39.83 talk about size limits - but I'm using these lists
to help pass on the information to you all in case this change may impact
your local implementations.

Although the change has been scheduled for 1 January 2007 (that seems a long
way off), there have been indications that some publishers plan to "jump the
gun" and start printing 13-digit numbers on their publications as early as
this summer. Therefore, it is anticipated that bibliographic systems could
start encountering these identifiers much earlier than 2007.

(Le message en français suit le message en anglais)

The International ISBN Agency has issued the first set of implementation
guidelines for the 13-digit ISBN on its Web site at:

 <http://www.isbn-international.org/revision.html>
http://www.isbn-international.org/revision.html

These implementation guidelines are intended to provide guidance for all
ISBN user sectors and to help organisations prepare for implementation of
the new 13-digit ISBN format. These guidelines may be subject to further
development so please bookmark that site for future updates (instead of
copying the guidelines).

A set of Frequently Asked Questions in English and French explaining these
changes to the ISBN system is also available on the Web at:

http://www.nlc-bnc.ca/iso/tc46sc9/isbn.htm
<http://www.nlc-bnc.ca/iso/tc46sc9/isbn.htm>

Please draw the attention of your colleagues to this important information
about changes to the ISBN system.

Thank you.

les organismes à se préparer à la mise en application des nouveaux numéros
ISBN à 13 chiffres.  Ces lignes directrices sont sujettes à changements;
nous vous recommandons donc de noter l'adresse du site web (plutôt que de
copier les lignes directrices).

Une "Foire aux questions" (en anglais et en français), qui explique les
changements au système des ISBN, est également disponible sur le web, à
l'adresse
