Seems to me the simplest approach would be to do this either as part of the search attribute or in additionalSearchInfo. Problem here of course is that if you generate large result sets in the search the target might not want to do the sort anyway because of the additional processing overhead - you then need to bring the sort diagnostics on the search response as well.
