Dear Jane, Long, long ago -- longer ago than I care to think -- you raised a number of issues against XML Schema 1.0 on behalf of those involved in developing MPEG-7. One of them has recently resurfaced and been addressed by the W3C XML Schema Working Group; this note is to let you know what happened. Among the issues you raised was an issue recorded in the Working Group's list of last-call comments as LC-151, requesting 'typed references'. The original form of your comments was, I believe, a document on DSTC's web server, which is no longer accessible. So the best summary I have been able to find is the one offered in the XML Schema WG's last-call issues list: http://www.w3.org/XML/Group/xmlschema-current/lcissues.html#typed-refs When XML Schema 1.0 was published as a Candidate Recommendation, we resolved this issue by (a) dividing into two distinct proposals, (b) noting that one of them was supported, and (c) reserving the second for later action, possibly in the context of a future version of XML Schema. The two proposals can be summarized as 1: constrain references to elements bearing particular names 2: constrain references to elements having particular simple or complex types (regardless of the element name) For further details, I cannot improve upon Frank Olken's email to you at the time http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/www-xml-schema-comments/ 2000OctDec/0179.html In due course, item 2 (the remaining part of the issue) was entered into the candidate requirements for XML Schema 1.1 as an 'opportunistic desideratum' (meaning if it turned out to be easy to do, we would do it, but that we did not plan to expend much effort on it). http://www.w3.org/XML/Group/2002/07/xmlschema-1.1-current-reqs- list.html#keys-constraints (member-only link -- I cannot find a public version of this document) And still later it was transferred into our current issue tracking system as issue 2633: http://www.w3.org/Bugs/Public/show_bug.cgi?id=2833 The Working Group recently considered this issue, in the context of a re-examination of currently outstanding issues, and concluded (again) that the important part of the issue you originally raised is item 1, which is supported by XML Schema 1.0; accordingly, we determined to close the issue without further action. We are interested in your response to this decision, as the originator of the issue we have been tracking. If we have misunderstood the requirement, or you are unsatisfied with the final resolution of the issue for any reason, please let us know by replying to this mail. If you are content with the resolution of the issue, again please let us know by replying to the mail. If we do not hear from you on this topic, we will assume that silence implies consent and that you are content with the disposition of the question. with best regards, --Michael Sperberg-McQueen World Wide Web Consortium
