The May 1999 draft did have syntax closer to what you were suggesting and patterned along the lines of DDML. In the Sept 1999 draft, the change toward the current syntax started and, as an outside observer, I doubt that restoration of the previous syntax is going to happen. However, I do think the previous use of <choice>, <sequence>, <all> and <empty> elements were much cleaner and I would like to see them come back at an appropriate time, but it is not an issue that I get apolexic about.
