Plans for the Xpointer xpointer() scheme

Hello,

Are there any plans for the further development of the XPointer xpointer() 
scheme? Currently it is a working draft, are there any plans to make a 
Recommendation of W3C?

If not, what do you suggest as an alternative? I'm working with DocBook 5 
using an RNG schema.
