It seems to me that the XLink Rec lacks a clear definition of the term "linking element". Since the term "linking element" is used in at least one definition in the Rec it seems to me that it should be itself more clearly defined. It is stated that there are two "linking elements". Nowhere in the Rec, as far as I can see, is it clearly stated which two "elements" these are supposed to be. Given that XLink used to include, in earlier drafts, xlink:simple and xlink:extended elements, it seems a reasonable guess that the term "linking element" is intended to refer to XML elements which possess an xlink:type attribute of value either "simple" or "extended". Of course these "XLink elements" are not in the XLink namespace so it is a questionable proposition whether the term "XLink element" is anything other than misleading when used in this context.
