The current (last call) draft http://www.w3.org/TR/2001/WD-xml-infoset-20010202 defines null as follows: Some properties may sometimes have the value null, in which case it is said the the property is null. Null is a value distinct from all others. In particular it is distinct from the empty string, which is simply a string containing no characters. -- Richard
