The breath of XML makes it a portable means to create a very powerful Graphical User Interface. Presently, the screen generation capabilities with forms and other facilities of XML-HTML of Amaya and other HTML editors are sufficient to replace the present GUIs (Windows) for many embedded and other applications. This also has the implication of eventually creating both graphics cards and printers that will directly execute XML-HTML. The use of common tools and Web Pages for both client and server based programs would greatly help the acceptance of XML-HTML by developers. It would provide a truly portable GUI, that was both operating system and vendor independent. For the above reasons, I believe that the XML and XHTML standards should include a description on how to create a totally client based system. The limitation of the use of this magnificent new software tool to client-server architectures is not in the interest of open standards, the Web, or the software community. Thank you. Robert C. Leif, Ph.D.
