Dear Chairs,
Over the past year or so, we have worked together with the IETF
to make it more straightforward to register MIME media types. On the
other hand, the TAG has produced a finding that recommends registration
of a MIME media type for every language/format defined by a WG.
Many WGs in the past have been struggling with the process of registering
a MIME media type, or have not even started the process because it looked
too difficult. This should no longer be the case. I have written up every-
thing necessary at http://www.w3.org/2002/06/registering-mediatype.html.
There are still some minor details to be ironed out, and the RFC with
the new process still has to be published, but I would like to take the
occasion of the Technical Plenary to discuss the most adequate way
forward for your Group.
Please go to http://www.w3.org/2002/06/registering-mediatype.html#Status
and check whether the status of your WG and your document formats is
adequately reflected, and send me any necessary updates.
Next, if you have a not-yet-registered MIME media-type, please check
the earlier sections in this document to find the instructions of how
to proceed. Please help me make these instructions as useful as possible.
For formats that are in an early stage of development, please
start following the new procedure outlined at
http://www.w3.org/2002/06/registering-mediatype.html#Planned.
For formats where development has completed, and where the Recommendation
does not contain the registration information on the MIME media type,
please follow the old procedure outlined at
http://www.w3.org/2002/06/registering-mediatype.html#Current.
For intermediate cases, please contact me (or Dan Connolly)
for advice.
Please feel free to forward this message to your WG, or to whoever
in the WG works on MIME media type registration.
Looking forward to meet you next week at the technical plenary,
With kind regards, Martin.
