A Question about the interactive model of Web Service

Hello Everyone!
I am learning about the interactive methods of web service, and there are several questions that puzzled me. They are: 

1 How the clients and the service providers interact with each other? In a synchronized way (like RPC)or asynchronized way(like MQ)? 

2 What techiques have provided participants in a web service invocaton with the ability to to handle responses to Web service requests that are not provided immediately but at a time after the initial request transactions complete?
