SSML 1.1 January 2008 meeting summary

The SSML subgroup of the Voice Browser Working Group held its eighth
meeting by teleconference on January 15-17, 2008. The meeting
included attendees by IBM, iFlyTek, France Telecom, Loquendo, and Voxeo.

The primary goals of this meeting were to review and address any
outstanding change requests, review and address any comments from
public reviewers of the fourth Working Draft, to make progress on the
Pronunciation Alphabet Registry, and to prepare for the Last Call
Working Draft.

We clarified that marks used in the new "startmark" and "endmark"
attributes of <speak> must be unique within the document; also, to be
consistent with the other attributes of <prosody>, the effect of the
<prosody> "duration" attribute now applies clearly only to text
content. We reverted the name of the registry to be the
"Pronunciation Alphabet Registry" and after discussion with W3C
leaders decided that IANA would be a better hosting entity than W3C.
We reviewed our draft registration policy, including how one would
request a new registry entry and the information that needs to be
stored in the registry. We expect to do more review over the next
month.

We confirmed that the <audio> element will have a "speed" attribute
and no "pitchcorrect" attribute but made some minor wording changes
to ensure that future pitch control attributes could be added without
conflict.

We are now having weekly teleconferences to work on issues that arise
and to track progress on the remaining IR assertions and tests.

We expect to publish a Last Call Working Draft of the specification
before our next meeting.

Our next meeting will be held in Beijing, China, from April 22-24.
